When renting out a storage container, mold is probably one of the last things on your mind. You might be thinking about which items to store and which to keep in your home. Or, perhaps, you're thinking about how to pack up items securely to put in the storage container. But an issue like mold can easily slip your mind.

However, if you want to ensure your items are kept in excellent condition, it's wise to do a few things to prevent mold. At Airtight Storage, we offer waterproof storage solutions. However, we still recommend following a few tips to keep your items mold and moisture free before packing them away.

Tip 1: Ensure Everything is Dry

While this might seem like the most obvious way to keep mold from growing on your stored items, it's still the most important tip. When you're in the midst of packing everything up, it's easy to forget to clean and dry everything thoroughly. However, if items are moisture-laden when packed away, they're more likely to grow mold and mildew.

Tip 2: Place Desiccators in Boxes and Containers

Desiccators are small packets, usually made of silicone gel, that help absorb moisture. You can actually purchase these packets and use them while packing up your items for storage. Consider putting a couple of these in each box or container to ensure extra moisture absorption, especially for more breakable items.

Tip 3: Use Vacuum Sealed Bags for Clothing

While boxes and plastic containers are helpful, some items are kept better protected from mold through other methods. For clothing, curtains, and linens, consider vacuum sealing them in bags. This will remove moisture from them and the air around them.

Tip 4: Think About Airflow

Airflow will ensure your items stay moisture free. When loading up the storage container, don't pack items too tightly next to the wall. Also, if the unit has a concrete floor, don't place boxes directly on top of the concrete, as this porous material can absorb water.

Tip 5: Choose a Waterproof Storage Container

If you pack items away while they're still wet, mold is likely to grow. But, you must also ensure that water from outside the unit can't get in. Choosing a reliable storage company that provides waterproof solutions is vital.
